Reusable mushroom packaging tested across major retailers
In Mechelen, several major retail chains (Carrefour, Delhaize, Colruyt, Lidl, ALDI and Albert Heijn) are taking part in a pilot project testing a reusable packaging system for mushrooms.
The project, called REPASYS, is a collective initiative led by Flanders’ Food and VIL, with the support of VLAIO. It is carried out in collaboration with strategic partner Pack4Food and academic partner University of Antwerp.
The system is based on a standardized, reusable tray. Consumers can purchase mushrooms in this tray at participating supermarkets and return it to any participating store in Mechelen. The packaging is then collected, cleaned and reintroduced into circulation.
Each tray is equipped with a QR code, enabling tracking of its use, including the number of rotations, lifecycle and returns, based on the standards of GS1 Belgilux.
The objective of the pilot is to assess both the operational feasibility of such a system and consumer adoption. The project also aims to evaluate whether reusable packaging models can be scaled up while balancing sustainability, logistical efficiency and customer experience.
