
Delhaize launches maatjes season with growth ambitions
Delhaize is officially launching the maatjes season, celebrating the return of these young herring known for their freshness and nutritional value. After selling over 1.4 million units in 2024, the retailer is aiming for a 10% increase in sales this year.
Traditionally popular, maatjes are now gaining renewed interest, especially among younger consumers looking for healthy, convenient, and flavorful foods. With their mild taste and tender texture, maatjes are ready to eat with no preparation required.
They are rich in omega-3, vitamins D and B12, and low in calories, making them a choice for quick summer meals or social occasions.
Delhaize also emphasizes quality and sustainability, sourcing maatjes through environmentally responsible fishing.
The retailer offers maatjes at €2.99 for two pieces and will launch a "buy one, get one free" promotion starting June 19. Throughout the summer, Delhaize will also share pairing ideas on its website.
