In Belgium, we’re known as the land of surrealism. And I couldn’t help but think of the famous artwork The Treachery of Images to illustrate this article about Carrefour’Buy Bye concept. Why? Because it’s not just a vending machine, it’s a microstore. And even calling it a microstore is somewhat reductive. Much like René Magritte’s iconic painting*, the Buy Bye microstore challenges us to look beyond the idea of an autonomous shop: it’s part of a true expansion strategy. In this article, I break down the concept and share my analysis.

 

This is not a smart fridge

The Buy Bye concept developed by Carrefour Belgium is neither a smart fridge nor a vending machine. It’s a genuine autonomous microstore, designed to meet new consumption habits and rhythms. This compact, intelligent, staffless format offers a very tangible glimpse into the future of retail.
