The first DMEXCO Digital Spring Summit

The first DMEXCO Digital Spring Summit

At the beginning of May, I had the opportunity to attend the first DMEXCO Digital Spring Summit. This event can be best described as a first warm up for the upcoming hybrid DMEXCO. Indeed the “real” main event usually takes place in September. But this new Spring digital happening has a lot of qualities to make it a regular feature in the international event agenda.

Interesting figures

In terms of statistics, the event did quite well for a first time. It featured more than 80 speakers on four parallel channels, a programming of more than 25 hours, and it attracted over 6,000 attendees. Professor Dominik MatykaChief Advisorof DMEXCO seemed pleased with the turnout: “The Digital Spring Summit was a successful launch and at the same time was the first milestone in the leadup to DMEXCO in Cologne. By focusing on Web3, we chose an absolute on-trend topic and presented top content — and that was a hit. But of course, we are already looking forward to the in-person reunion with our community and to the entire spectrum of digital marketing”.

Good content

The agenda offered varied sessions both in German and English. I must say the content overall was quite interesting. However, this Spring summit didn’t offer big keynotes like the September event usually does.

Nevertheless, I could learn a few things and here are some of the key takeaways I noted:

  • At some point in the near future, brands will have to be active in the virtual worlds (metaverse, gaming etc.)
  • Crypto, blockchain NFT’s will gain in importance in the next ten years,
  • Intermediaries and brokers will become obsolete as valuable digital assets will be able to be acquired onchain via decentralized servers.

Timid networking

As the name indicates, it was a digital event. You know? The kind that you can follow from the comfort of your home or office and you don’t need to travel. And one of the great things with this organizer is that the used digital platform actually offers great networking tools. However, compared to last year’s September, I didn’t get the feeling that making new connections was a priority amongst attendees. Also, the open chats during sessions seemed less active.

Nonetheless, this Spring summit was an interesting event for anyone active in the marketing community. And I’ll conclude with this piece of information for those interested: DMEXCO 2022 will take place on September 21 and 22, 2022. And it will be a hybrid event meaning with an online access and of course an on-site event in Cologne.
